We met in the Ian Potter Museum of Art after you had been away for a month. You stood in the burnt red room alone as I walked in; our anxious steps trembled loudly on the timber floor as we reunited.
You showed me around your favourite works in an exhibition re-imagining fairytale narratives in modern times, and we ended up cuddling in an empty room on our own for a very long while.
The next night we walked down Johnston Street hand in hand to Fitzroy. After dinner at Yong Green's and a few cocktails at Naked for Satan (and your first ever gin and tonic), we found ourselves telling stories and laughing in three different languages, our nerves drowned in alcoholic courage. You asked me if I liked you and I told you that I might.
We kissed in the dim lit bar and lovingly strolled back to yours.
On the weekend, we hung out in the Melbourne General Cemetery ambling by random grave stones and a random Elvis memorial before eating strawberries in Princes Park. We sat by the lake watching dogs wade in and out of the water, and hoped they would not shake themselves dry near us. We danced to The Harpoons playing live at Howler. I'll never forget the walk back along the lamps of Princes Park at night. We hid on a bench away from the sprinklers hoping that we could escape time.
You came over to my place in your vintage oversized woollen red sweater. I showed you photos from my childhood and some lovely words very dear people have written to me. We made tofu wraps together before rushing to the Moonlight Cinema to watch Ladybird.
We sung la vie en rose together and forgot to bring a bottle opener for our beers.
Our minds were in awe after the movie. The film eloquently explored The themes around coming of age, relationships with parents and how love is expressed with its outstanding acting and writing.
We strolled around King's Domain before ending up by the Shrine of Remembrance flame. I remember taking your photo and thinking how you had become my muse and lit up my life.
We love sharing new books and exploring lots of bookstores with each other.
I had seldom read any science fiction before, and now I've almost finished the Three Body Problem trilogy by Li Cixin, which are some of your favourite novels ever. I remember how you lit up when you told me about the narrative and how it interweaves physics with spirituality and existential questions.
I had just finished the first novel when we went to Paperback Books looking for the second novel in the series. We didn't find it, but you took a lovely photo of me.
I love how you encourage me to read more for different perspectives on ideas I haven't really thought about.
Our spontaneous dates where we "accidentally"run into each other have been some of my favourites. Whether it's a sudden adventure to the NGV, a fancy wine bar, or just a walk together, it is so special spending time with you.
I love how I never really know where we'll go until we're in the moment.
You're curious, intelligent, deeply cynical, and lovingly affectionate.
Together there have been endlessly sweet memories and I know there will be more to come. I haven't felt this warm and fuzzy for a long time.
thank you for being you mengmeng
i love you
