Road to Refuge has a special place in my heart.
As their Communications Director for two years, I used my skills to provide a platforms for refugee voices to shape mainstream discourse: on their terms and in their words.
In 2017, I helped bring an art exhibition from Sydney into the heart of Melbourne at Federation Square, which explored the strength, resilience and hope of people from refugee backgrounds and people seeking asylum, in their words. I met Tina and Renee, two tireless advocates working hard to ensure queer identities are included in refugee advocacy, and to challenge stereotypes on who "refugees" are.
In 2018, we created "Meet Fadak", Australia's first refugee-led speaking tour around the country. We crowd-funded $10,000 and worked with Fadak closely to literally thrust her into the national spotlight, with features on ABC, SBS and VICE. Her story has reached hundreds of thousands of Australians, and it will continue to do so.
Road to Refuge fundamentally believes successful social movements are led by the people affected most by the issues, and so the refugee movement needs a new wave of leaders to spark change in a broken, punitive and inhumane Australian border control system.
